Characteristics of Godly Friends

1.) Godly friends Sharpen Each Other.

Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. Friends sharpen one another spiritually, mentally, and physically. They can sharpen an issue and make it useful.

2.) Godly Friends Assure Each Other Through Adversity.

Proverbs 17:17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. A true friend will love his friend no matter what. A true brother will be their in time of need. Adversity is the test of friendship.

3.) Godly Friends Participate With Each Others Lives.

Proverbs 18:24 A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother. Godly friends are eager to cooperate, encourage, and help each other. There is self-sacrificing effort involved in being a friend.

4.) Godly Friends Participate In Each Others Emotions.

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Friendship can double our joy and divide our grief. We must put aside jealousy when a friend is promoted, and we put aside personal joy to mourn with the grieving.

5.) Godly Friends Forgive One Another.

Colossians 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. Friends will eventually hurt each other – and usually unintentionally. Yet, where the Spirit of the Lord is there is peace. Godly friends resolve tension and quickly forgive.

6.) Godly Friends Do not Harbor Anger.

Proverbs 22:24-25 Make no friendship with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go: Lest thou learn his ways, and get a snare to thy soul. The Bible teaches that we should avoid friendships with an angry man. A godly friendship will not be built upon common anger, bitterness, or grievances.

7.) Godly Friends speak the truth to each other.

Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful. Godly friends are not afraid to lovingly and appropriately speak the truth to one another. In fact, they long to hear the truth from each other. They recognize that everybody has “blind spots” and they rejoice that God has given them “another set of spiritual eyes” to help guide, guard, and protect.

Beyond that, godly friends rejoice in truth. They discover truth together. They talk about truth. They encourage each other in it and through it. Truth is the common bond of their hearts – a love for God’s Word and a love for communicating His truth to people. God desires to give you this kind of friend, and if you will allow Him, you will be most blessed!

8.) Godly Friends Pray For One Another.

Job 42:10 And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before. The greatest single thing that we can ever do for a friend is pray for them.
